Google has announced updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search to help users discover websites, access original content and explore topics beyond AI-generated summaries. Announced on October 15, 2026, the changes focus on making links more visible, providing better context about sources and improving the presentation of relevant online content. The updates are designed to help users move from an AI-generated answer to the websites and articles that provide additional information, while making it easier to identify sources relevant to their searches.

One major change involves inline links, which appear directly within AI-generated responses. Google is increasing their visibility and making important links appear higher in responses more frequently, allowing users to open relevant sources while reading an answer. The company is also testing a dedicated section at the top of certain AI responses to highlight official websites, accompanied by explanations of why each link may be useful. This feature is intended to help users find authoritative pages when completing specific tasks or seeking information directly from an organisation.

Google is also expanding prominent news carousels across additional locations and languages, making timely articles easier to discover through AI Search. These carousels can highlight users’ Preferred Sources, helping them find reporting from publications they follow. In addition, links to related articles displayed at the end of some AI responses will feature more prominent designs and image thumbnails. Google has also begun testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode, allowing users to visit Search profiles to learn more about the people and organisations behind the content.

The changes build on Google’s broader efforts to connect AI-powered search with the wider web rather than limiting users to generated answers. The company said it would continue refining how links are displayed and how users discover relevant sources based on feedback and observed usage. For publishers and content creators, more visible links and creator profiles could provide additional routes for audiences to discover their work, although the actual impact on referral traffic will depend on how users interact with the updated features. The rollout of individual changes may vary by location, language and search experience.
