Google has begun rolling out two significant upgrades to Gmail’s Help Me Write feature, bringing Gemini-powered artificial intelligence capabilities that move well beyond generic email suggestions and into territory that feels considerably more personal and contextually aware. The rollout began on May 5, 2026, through an extended deployment, with full feature visibility potentially taking more than 15 days to reach all eligible users. Both upgrades activate automatically when relevant context is detected within a prompt, and users are not required to seek administrator approval to access the new capabilities.

The first enhancement, called topic contextualisation, connects the Help Me Write tool directly to a user’s Google Drive and Gmail history based on the content of their prompt. When composing an email, the feature automatically pulls relevant information such as budget figures, project updates, or reference documents from across a user’s Workspace environment and inserts it into the draft without requiring the user to manually locate, copy, and paste information from separate applications. Google has positioned this as a direct response to the friction caused by switching between apps during the drafting process, and internal surveys found that 85 percent of users want artificial intelligence tools that can actively leverage their own existing content rather than generating responses from scratch with no contextual grounding.

The second upgrade introduces tone and style personalisation, through which Help Me Write analyses a user’s previously sent emails to identify and replicate their individual communication patterns. Whether a user tends toward brief, informal messages or longer, more structured professional correspondence, the artificial intelligence adapts its drafts to match that established voice rather than defaulting to a generic neutral register. Google described this as making artificial intelligence-generated emails sound less like they came from a machine and more like they came from the person actually sending them, a distinction that matters considerably in professional contexts where voice and relationship dynamics are closely tied. Eligible users include Google Workspace Business and Enterprise subscribers, Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers, and education customers with the Gemini add-on, covering a broad base of professional and institutional Gmail users worldwide.
