foodpanda Pakistan has emerged as a key player in the country’s digital and economic transformation, according to a recently released Economic Impact Assessment conducted independently by LUMS. The study shows that foodpanda contributed an impressive $1.2 billion to Pakistan’s economy in the fiscal year 2023/2024, up from $751 million in FY 2021/2022. The report sheds light on how digital platforms are not only creating jobs but also formalizing business activity, encouraging entrepreneurship, and driving financial inclusion.

Sharing his thoughts on the findings, Muntaqa Peracha, CEO of foodpanda Pakistan, stated via tweet, “Today foodpanda launched the Economic Impact Assessment report independently done by LUMS to gauge the impact that foodpanda Pakistan had on the country’s economy. Happy to report that the number shared by the University is a staggering $1.2 billion. Shows how digital platforms and the tech industry can not just enable employment but also launch new businesses and entrepreneurs, forming part of the documented economy. Some key aspects of the report are shared in the infographic. Thank you to our teams, our partners, the government and media that have helped us scale our business to achieve these numbers.” (Source: @muntaqa)

Among the key metrics shared from the report, foodpanda facilitated PKR 75 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) from restaurants, highlighting its role in accelerating digital commerce across the food industry. The platform has also enabled a new segment of entrepreneurs through its HomeChefs initiative, providing an average monthly income of PKR 120,000 to independent culinary professionals, empowering them to operate as formal business entities from their homes.

On the logistics front, foodpanda’s impact has extended to its large network of freelance riders. Out of the 100,000 freelance riders working with the platform, 57% reported an increase in their income, underlining how gig economy models can provide flexible and scalable earning opportunities for Pakistan’s workforce. This trend aligns with the larger global shift towards flexible digital work models and micro-entrepreneurship.

Additionally, the company emphasized its contribution to national revenue streams. foodpanda’s tax contribution stands at PKR 9.76 billion, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and compliance with regulatory frameworks. This figure not only represents the company’s growth but also signifies its integration into the formal economy, supporting broader financial governance and state revenue generation.

The Economic Impact Assessment further underscores foodpanda’s evolving role as more than a food delivery service. Through fostering income opportunities, enabling small business growth, and committing to tax transparency, the platform is shaping a stronger, more inclusive digital economy in Pakistan.
