The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched an informational campaign aimed at educating taxpayers about income tax filing and its newly developed online filing portal. The initiative, announced on Monday, involves direct phone calls to taxpayers from official numbers designated by the revenue authority.

The campaign comes at a time when FBR continues to emphasize the importance of filing tax returns to expand the tax net and ensure compliance with national fiscal regulations. According to the official statement, calls will be placed to taxpayers from a series of Karachi-based telephone numbers. The list includes 021-38901090 through 021-38901099, which have been published to allow citizens to verify the authenticity of the communication.

FBR clarified that the calls are intended solely for informational purposes and will serve to guide individuals on how to use the new filing system, while also underlining the broader significance of filing returns on time. Officials highlighted that the outreach effort is part of a wider drive to strengthen taxpayer facilitation and remove barriers linked with understanding filing processes.

The revenue authority has stressed that the campaign does not involve any demand for sensitive personal or financial information over the phone. Instead, the objective is to provide clarity regarding the updated filing platform, improve awareness about compliance deadlines, and encourage participation in the tax system. The official statement reassured taxpayers that the activity remains confined to guidance and awareness, without any enforcement aspect attached.

To further support individuals during the campaign, FBR has also reminded taxpayers about its dedicated helpline service. Citizens with questions or concerns can contact the helpline at 051-111-772-772. This step is designed to supplement the phone-based outreach with a channel that offers direct assistance for technical queries and procedural issues.

The announcement reflects FBR’s ongoing focus on leveraging technology to engage with the public and streamline communication. In recent years, the authority has made efforts to digitize tax filing processes, including the introduction of portals and apps that simplify submission of returns. The latest campaign demonstrates a more proactive stance, bringing guidance directly to taxpayers rather than expecting them to seek out information independently.

Tax experts note that such initiatives can play a crucial role in enhancing voluntary compliance. By addressing information gaps and providing accessible instructions, authorities can encourage more people to participate in the tax system. However, they also emphasize that transparency and security remain essential, particularly given the risks of fraudulent calls in the broader telecommunications environment.

The Federal Board of Revenue’s campaign comes against the backdrop of persistent challenges in widening Pakistan’s tax base. While the government has consistently reiterated its commitment to broadening participation, only a fraction of eligible citizens currently file returns. Initiatives such as the current phone-based awareness drive are therefore seen as part of a larger strategy to promote compliance through facilitation rather than enforcement alone.

As the campaign progresses, its effectiveness will likely depend on both the clarity of the information provided and the trust established between FBR and taxpayers. By openly publishing the numbers used for calls and reinforcing the role of its official helpline, the authority has sought to reassure citizens that the outreach is legitimate and secure. Whether this strategy leads to an increase in return filings will become clearer in the coming months, as taxpayers engage with the system ahead of deadlines.

The FBR’s phone outreach initiative reflects an effort to merge technology, communication, and governance, signaling a gradual shift toward more direct taxpayer engagement. It illustrates how public institutions in Pakistan are beginning to use modern channels of communication to bridge information gaps and promote compliance in an evolving digital environment.
