Following the announcement of Divinity at The Game Awards 2025, Larian Studios has expanded its presence across current generation consoles by releasing Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition as a native version for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series S and X. While the critically acclaimed role playing game was previously playable on these platforms through backward compatibility from PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One versions, the newly released editions are designed specifically for current hardware, offering improved performance and platform level enhancements.

The native release means that players can expect smoother gameplay, faster load times, and better overall stability compared to running the game through compatibility modes. Larian Studios has confirmed that existing owners of Divinity Original Sin 2 can access the upgraded version without additional cost in most regions. Depending on the platform, players who already have the game installed will receive a free update corresponding to their console. Those who no longer have the title installed but wish to revisit it on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, or Xbox Series consoles can download the appropriate upgrade directly from the respective digital store pages at no charge. An exception applies to users in Japan who are upgrading from Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2 or from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, where a nominal upgrade fee of 100 yen will be required.

Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition originally launched in 2018, one year after the release of the base game. The Definitive Edition expanded the storyline, refined combat balance, and introduced quality of life improvements while preserving the depth and flexibility that defined the original experience. Even before these refinements, the base version of Divinity Original Sin 2 was widely regarded as one of the finest computer role playing games ever created. Critics and players praised its rich narrative, complex characters, and freedom driven gameplay systems. The game received exceptional critical acclaim across the industry, including a 9.6 out of 10 score from Wccftech, which described it as a rare example of a role playing game with minimal flaws, highlighting its writing, character development, and multiplayer design.

Although Larian Studios would later surpass this achievement with the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, Divinity Original Sin 2 continues to hold a strong position within the fantasy RPG genre. The native console release provides both returning players and newcomers with an opportunity to experience the world of Rivellon in its most refined console form. Larian has stated that players who choose to wait for the newly announced Divinity title will not face narrative barriers, as the upcoming game is designed to be accessible to new audiences. At the same time, fans who have played earlier entries will recognize elements of continuity and familiar characters, adding depth for long time followers of the franchise.

With the launch of these native versions, Larian Studios reinforces its commitment to supporting its catalog across evolving hardware generations. The updated release ensures that Divinity Original Sin 2 remains relevant for current console audiences while serving as a bridge for players preparing to explore the next chapter in the Divinity universe.
