PTA has issued a stern warning to consumers regarding the increasing prevalence of counterfeit mobile phones in the market. The telecom regulator emphasized the importance of exercising caution when purchasing mobile devices to avoid falling victim to fraudulent activities.

To safeguard consumers, PTA has outlined several key precautions. Firstly, it is crucial to purchase phones from reputable sellers and insist on receiving the device in its original packaging. Secondly, consumers should meticulously verify that the IMEI number printed on the phone’s box matches the one displayed on the device itself. Additionally, the presence of a PTA stamp on the box is a vital indicator of authenticity.

To further authenticate the device, PTA recommends utilizing the DVS app, sending an SMS with the IMEI number to 8484, or visiting PTA website. Consumers are strongly advised to be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, particularly when purchasing expensive phones at suspiciously low prices or without a warranty.

In the event of suspected fraud, PTA urges consumers to preserve the original packaging, contact the seller immediately, and report the matter to FIA for necessary action.

PTA’s advisory aims to protect consumers from financial loss and ensure the integrity of the mobile phone market.
