Cloud’s first avatar aka cloud 1.0 was all about agility, scalability, time and cost savings. Today the model is evolving, making way for its next version, which is more interactive, intelligent and business driven.
Technology has been evolving constantly and so has the exciting concept of delivering computing services as a utility also known as cloud. Cloud 1.0, or the first version of cloud computing, enabled access to a shared pool of resources and services which required minimal enterprise effort. Enterprises gained on infrastructure costs and time even as they diverted precious resources towards core business areas.

Through cloud 1.0, CIOs have more or less solved the initial concerns of never-ending in house efforts, complex technological upgrades and resource management. They have even determined whether to move to a public, private or a hybrid cloud from the traditional `on premise’ model.

Cloud 1.0 enabled digital enterprises to go agile and automate processes as it allowed them to scale up infrastructure based purely on need. That was all until a couple of years ago when enterprises began seeking more from cloud. This helped in the transition of cloud from version 1.0 to version 2.0. Cloud 2.0 is set to redefine cloud computing for the future.

Cloud 2.0: Adding business value and redefining CIOs’ role

As their functions get re-defined once cloud 2.0 takes over, CIOs are assuming a pivotal role. They can utilize cloud 2.0 to understand business issues through data insights and drive business objectives comprehensively. With the help of emerging technologies such as big data analytics (BDA) and machine learning (ML), cloud 2.0 will be a force to reckon with. It will be the hub or the data centre that gathers and deeply analyses data to provide actionable insights pertaining to all aspects of business.

With the help of emerging technologies such as big data analytics (BDA) and machine learning (ML), cloud 2.0 will be a force to reckon with.

As BDA and cloud 2.0 converge, CIOs will be able to harness this combination of technologies to gain deeper insights into business issues and find viable solutions. The power of this combination aided with ML techniques will boost innovation as well as efficiencies while providing enterprises the competitive edge they are looking for.  Another advantage cloud 2.0 brings is the increase in the use of micro-service apps or platforms which are instrumental in lowering app failure rates while enabling a continuous delivery and deployment of complex applications.

Evolution: Innovation with analytics and Intelligence

Cloud 1.0 is the foundation that provided the much needed outsourced infrastructure, helping enterprises get more agile and save on costs. Cloud 2.0 builds on this base and helps enterprises move beyond agility and cost savings towards innovation, analytics and intelligence. With the help of emerging technologies cloud 2.0 will provide enterprises the competitive edge they need and help them sustain their lead over the long term.

To conclude, cloud 2.0 will usher in phenomenal business value, while helping CIOs to reaffirm their role as strategic advisors fostering innovation and addressing business challenges while keeping a tab on the traditional IT.
