China has initiated a commercial pilot program for satellite-based Internet of Things (IoT) services, aiming to expand its satellite communications market and support rapidly growing industries such as commercial aerospace and the low-altitude economy. The program was announced during the 2025 China 5G + Industrial Internet Conference held in Wuhan, Hubei province. Over the course of the two-year trial, qualified companies will be allowed to provide satellite IoT services in line with existing regulatory frameworks and legal requirements, according to reports from APP.

The pilot program is designed to strengthen the capabilities of service providers while establishing models that can be replicated across the sector. Officials from China Daily highlighted that the initiative seeks to energize industry participants, enhance service capacity, and create a strong regulatory and security framework. By fostering structured development in the satellite communications ecosystem, the program aims to enable scalable and secure solutions for a variety of industrial applications, ensuring that companies can adopt space-based IoT technologies with confidence.

Satellite IoT leverages space-based communication networks to connect large volumes of devices across land, sea, and air. This technology facilitates the collection and transmission of data for sectors including marine fisheries, logistics and transportation, energy management, water resource monitoring, emergency communication services, and low-altitude aviation. Its integration into industrial operations is expected to improve efficiency, provide real-time monitoring, and enhance decision-making capabilities in environments where traditional terrestrial networks may be limited or unavailable.

By introducing this pilot program, China is positioning itself as a leader in next-generation industrial connectivity. The initiative not only broadens the commercial potential of satellite communications but also aligns with the country’s broader digital and industrial strategies, which emphasize data-driven solutions and enhanced technological infrastructure. As companies participate in the program, the resulting insights and operational practices are anticipated to form a foundation for future large-scale deployment of satellite IoT services, supporting growth across multiple sectors and contributing to the development of a robust industrial internet ecosystem in China.
