Apple has pushed out iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4, delivering a surprisingly feature-rich point release that goes well beyond the bug fixes and minor tweaks typically associated with incremental updates. The headline addition is Playlist Playground, Apple’s new artificial intelligence-powered song list generator built into Apple Music, which allows users to type a prompt describing a mood, feeling, activity, or theme and receive a curated playlist tailored to that input. The feature follows a similar trajectory to Spotify’s artificial intelligence playlist tool, which launched for premium users in 2024, and positions Apple Music more competitively in the space of personalised, AI-driven music discovery.

Beyond Playlist Playground, the update introduces an ambient music widget that places Apple’s background sounds feature directly on the home screen. Mirroring the existing Control Center tool, the widget offers access to Apple-curated soundscapes designed for sleep, focus, relaxation, or general well-being. Apple Music also gains Bandsintown integration in this release, meaning upcoming concert dates in the user’s local area will now surface directly within the app, adding a practical live events layer to the music experience. Together, the three music-related additions make iOS 26.4 a notably substantial update for Apple Music users in particular.

The update also delivers Unicode’s latest emoji characters, a batch that includes the “Hairy Creature” widely known as Bigfoot, a fight cloud reminiscent of old-style cartoon brawls, a trombone, a treasure chest, a distorted face, an apple core, an orca, ballet dancers, and a landslide icon. On the software stability front, Apple has used the release to address a handful of persistent issues that have drawn user complaints since iOS 26 launched. A new “Reduce Bright Effects” setting has been added in response to ongoing feedback about the Liquid Glass visual interface introduced in the current generation of the operating system, offering users greater control over its intensity. A keyboard bug that caused errors during rapid typing has also been resolved in this update.
