Apple is reportedly preparing a significant update to CarPlay that would allow third-party artificial intelligence assistants to operate within the vehicle interface. Popular AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude could soon be accessed via voice commands while driving, marking a major expansion of in-car AI capabilities beyond Apple’s own Siri assistant.
Until now, CarPlay has been limited to Siri and a select group of apps for navigation, messaging, and music. The planned update reflects Apple’s response to growing consumer demand for more sophisticated AI features in vehicles. Drivers would be able to ask contextual questions, receive real-time information, and access AI-assisted guidance hands-free, without interacting with their iPhone or dashboard controls.
Apple will maintain control over the experience by keeping Siri as the default voice assistant. Third-party AI applications will not replace Siri’s wake word or main system button. To use another assistant, drivers will need to open the relevant app in CarPlay, though developers can configure the software to enter voice mode automatically once launched. This approach balances Apple’s ecosystem control with expanded functionality.
The integration of conversational AI tools in CarPlay could provide drivers with advanced assistance for a variety of tasks, including route planning, traffic and weather updates, finding local services, or composing messages and summaries. Given Apple’s existing partnerships, such as incorporating Google Gemini features to enhance Siri, extending AI capabilities to CarPlay represents a logical next step in making in-car experiences more interactive and intelligent.
