Pakistan’s President House, known as Aiwan-i-Saddar, has become one of the world’s few solar-powered presidential residences to meet its electricity needs.
As a result, under the Green Presidency Initiative, Engro Corporation has constructed a 1 MW solarization project, making Aiwan-i-Saddar one of the few presidencies in the world to be totally powered by green energy.
The Green Presidency Initiative, the brainchild of President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, began with an exhaustive sustainability and energy efficiency audit and concluded in the effective implementation of purpose-driven solutions.
Engro Energy, a subsidiary of Engro Corporation, erected a state-of-the-art 1 MW solar panel system at the Presidency as part of this project, which will assist cut carbon emissions by 1400 tonnes and save the government roughly Rs. 32 million. To put this in perspective, this is the equivalent of planting 57,000 mature trees. Net metering allows you to contribute all of your excess energy to the national grid.
Green Building credits are also available for the Green Presidency programme, which were earned by sustainable methods such as rainwater management, water metering, trash management, and self-sustaining plants. The project is part of the PTI government’s long-term sustainability plan, which is being driven by a variety of projects around the country.
“Pakistan is the fifth most vulnerable country to climate change, and we must take quick action to address the catastrophic effects of global warming,” Ghias Khan, President & CEO of Engro Corporation, said at the event. The government’s efforts to prioritise the sustainability agenda are admirable, and Engro is dedicated to helping support these efforts. Engro is working aggressively to expand its net-zero aspirations and promote renewable energy in the Energy business vertical because sustainability is at the heart of our decisions.”
“Our traditions and Islamic beliefs demand for promoting conservation and ethical utilisation of natural resources,” Dr. Arif Alvi said, acknowledging Engro’s contribution to this role model public-private collaboration. We must all demonstrate a commitment to sustainability in order to manage the expanding population’s imprint. The government is making all efforts to establish a more sustainable future for Pakistan, including globally acknowledged projects like the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami, while also urging the corporate sector to fulfil its social responsibilities by contributing in these efforts.”
The Green Presidency Initiative is expected to serve as a national model for green construction and sustainability. It is proof of the influence that can be made in the fight against climate change by working together and thinking creatively.
