Players progressing through Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will encounter one of the game’s more deceptive environmental puzzles while exploring the Poolside Cave during the Roamers’ trial. On Underground Level 2, a cryptic riddle greets players with the words, “A chest that rests in a wintry bath, Will show us the Almighty’s path.” At first glance, the challenge appears straightforward, especially for role playing game veterans conditioned to open every treasure chest they encounter. However, this particular area is designed to punish that instinct, turning curiosity into a serious risk for parties still early in their journey or playing on higher difficulty settings.

The room housing the riddle is filled with treasure chests, but most of them are either empty or conceal Cannibox enemies disguised as loot. These monsters are especially dangerous at this stage of the game due to their high critical hit rate and their ability to cast Whack, the instant death spell that has long been feared across the Dragon Quest series. Encountering even one Cannibox can quickly overwhelm an unprepared party, and fighting several in succession can derail progress entirely. For players learning the mechanics through experience, the encounter serves as an early reminder that not all rewards in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined are meant to be claimed immediately. The riddle itself is the key to navigating this trap laden room safely.

Solving the puzzle requires careful observation of the environment rather than trial and error. The phrase “wintry bath” points directly to water rather than treasure placement. On the eastern side of Underground Level 2, players will find two chests positioned near a pool of water. Among them, only one satisfies the riddle’s description. The correct chest is the upper of the two and is partially submerged in the pool itself. Opening this chest does not trigger combat. Instead, players will hear a distinct rumbling sound, signaling that the correct action has been taken and that the mechanism tied to the riddle has been activated. Ignoring the other chests in the room is strongly advised, as they serve no purpose beyond baiting players into unnecessary and punishing battles.

Once the rumbling ends, the environment changes subtly but meaningfully. A previously inaccessible staircase appears on the western side of the map, providing the route forward. Descending the newly revealed stairs allows players to continue deeper into the cave, where progression depends on interacting with a Stone Tablet that advances the Roamers’ trial and the broader storyline. This sequence reinforces Dragon Quest VII Reimagined’s emphasis on exploration combined with restraint, rewarding players who read clues carefully rather than relying on brute force or habit.

This guidance is based on an extended playthrough exceeding fifty hours on the 1.0 Steam version of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, with observations drawn directly from in game behavior and mechanics as presented in that release. The Poolside Cave puzzle stands out as a compact example of how the reimagined title blends classic Dragon Quest design with modern expectations, using environmental storytelling and risk management to shape player decisions. For those navigating Underground Level 2, understanding the intent behind the riddle can mean the difference between smooth progression and repeated party wipes at the hands of disguised enemies.
