The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a new digital service enabling citizens to register births and deaths directly through the PakID mobile app. Initially rolled out in the union councils of Jhelum, Chakwal and Nankana Sahib in Punjab, this facility offers residents a more efficient way to complete vital registrations without multiple visits to local offices. These districts were selected as priority areas because routine administrative processes have been disrupted by recent floods, making access to official services more challenging for affected communities.
By integrating birth and death registration into the PakID mobile app, NADRA aims to make essential services more accessible to families, especially in rural or disaster-hit areas. Through the app, citizens can submit applications, upload necessary documents and track the status of their cases from their mobile devices. Officials stated that this approach will not only save time and travel costs for citizens but also reduce administrative pressures on union council offices, which often face heavy foot traffic and paperwork backlogs.
According to NADRA, preparations are already underway to expand this digital service beyond Punjab. The authority is coordinating with local administrations in other provinces to ensure that the necessary administrative and technical frameworks are in place for a nationwide rollout. Once operational, more communities across Pakistan will be able to benefit from the convenience and efficiency of mobile-based registration of births and deaths. This move is part of NADRA’s larger strategy to digitize citizen services and simplify procedures for residents, particularly in underserved or remote locations.
Officials highlighted that the digital registration of vital events provides several advantages. Citizens will be able to complete their registrations without visiting government offices, ensuring greater convenience. Families living in flood-affected or rural areas will gain improved access to official records without delays caused by physical visits. Processing times are expected to be faster compared to manual registration, reducing administrative bottlenecks and improving service delivery. Additionally, a centralized digital record system will ensure more accurate population data and enhance transparency in record-keeping. These improvements, NADRA noted, are aligned with Pakistan’s broader objectives of modernizing governance and improving public service delivery under the Digital Pakistan initiative.
