Government of Punjab has achieved a significant milestone in digital taxation, collecting a record-breaking PKR 710 billion in revenue through e-Pay Punjab since its inception in October 2019. The digital tax payment solution, developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) in collaboration with the Punjab Finance Department, has revolutionized tax collection, making it more efficient and transparent. This achievement was highlighted during a progress review meeting chaired by PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf, where officials discussed the impact and expansion of the system.
With more than 78 million online transactions processed so far, e-Pay Punjab has emerged as a key pillar of the province’s digital transformation strategy. The system enables citizens to pay 87 different types of taxes across 18 government departments, including property tax, vehicle token tax, e-challan fines, and professional taxes, among others. This initiative has significantly reduced the reliance on traditional payment methods that often involved long queues, bureaucratic delays, and the potential for corruption.
The participants of the meeting were informed that the e-Pay Punjab app has been downloaded over 5.3 million times, reflecting its widespread acceptance among the public. The digital payment system allows users to make transactions from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for physical visits to government offices and reducing the influence of intermediaries.
Speaking at the meeting, Chairman Faisal Yousaf underscored the transformative impact of e-Pay Punjab, stating, “The platform has significantly reduced the need for physical visits to government offices and eliminated the influence of middlemen, ensuring transparency and ease of payment.” He also highlighted that the government is continuously working to enhance the system by introducing new services that will further streamline the digital payment process and improve user convenience.
The success of e-Pay Punjab is part of a broader effort by the Punjab government to digitize public services and create a more efficient governance framework. The system not only facilitates seamless tax collection but also promotes financial inclusion by encouraging more people to adopt digital payment methods. This is particularly crucial as Pakistan moves towards a more digitized economy, aligning with global trends in financial technology and e-governance.
As the platform continues to expand, the government remains committed to incorporating additional services, ensuring that e-Pay Punjab remains at the forefront of digital financial solutions in the country. The ongoing efforts to improve the system are expected to further enhance transparency, minimize tax evasion, and strengthen revenue collection, ultimately benefiting the province’s economic development.
