The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has formally designated 1LINK (Private) Limited as a Payment System Operator (PSO), marking a significant development in Pakistan’s financial infrastructure landscape. The announcement underscores the central bank’s commitment to strengthening the digital payments ecosystem and ensuring greater efficiency, security, and innovation in financial transactions across the country.

1LINK has long been a central player in Pakistan’s payments industry, operating the country’s largest switch and interbank network. With the official designation as a PSO, the company is now formally recognized as a critical institution for processing and managing payment transactions in compliance with SBP’s regulatory framework. The move also reinforces SBP’s efforts to promote a transparent and regulated financial ecosystem while accelerating the shift toward a cashless economy.

The designation comes at a time when Pakistan is witnessing rapid growth in digital financial services, driven by increased adoption of mobile wallets, QR code payments, Raast instant payment systems, and online banking platforms. By granting this recognition to 1LINK, the State Bank aims to further institutionalize the role of interoperable payment systems in driving financial inclusion and supporting the growth of digital commerce.

Officials familiar with the development noted that 1LINK’s designation as a PSO will enhance the reliability and governance of digital payment infrastructures, enabling smoother settlement processes and greater trust among banks, fintechs, and end-users. The recognition also places additional emphasis on compliance, security, and technological innovation, as the company will be required to adhere strictly to SBP’s regulatory and operational standards.

Industry experts believe this development will encourage greater confidence in Pakistan’s payment ecosystem, especially for stakeholders such as commercial banks, microfinance institutions, fintech startups, and e-commerce platforms. By ensuring that payment systems are well regulated, SBP is not only protecting consumers but also creating an environment conducive to investment and innovation in digital financial services.

1LINK already provides a wide range of services, including ATM and POS switching, bill payments, interbank fund transfers, and connectivity for over 40 banks and financial institutions nationwide. Its designation as a PSO now places it in a stronger position to scale its operations and further expand its portfolio in line with Pakistan’s national payment systems strategy.

The central bank’s move aligns with its broader vision of building a digitally enabled and inclusive financial sector. Over the past few years, SBP has launched multiple initiatives such as Raast, the country’s instant payment system, and has encouraged financial institutions to adopt modern payment technologies. By formally recognizing 1LINK as a Payment System Operator, SBP is adding another layer of credibility and structure to Pakistan’s evolving financial infrastructure.

The recognition also holds significance for consumers, as it promises greater efficiency, interoperability, and reliability in digital transactions. As more people and businesses transition to digital channels for everyday payments, regulated operators like 1LINK will play an essential role in safeguarding transaction integrity while promoting convenience and accessibility.

Industry observers suggest that the official recognition will also accelerate collaboration between public and private stakeholders in the payments industry. With digital transactions growing at record pace, this step is being viewed as part of Pakistan’s long-term vision to reduce reliance on cash, expand financial inclusion, and support sustainable economic growth through a technology-driven payments ecosystem.
