X is preparing to make its recommendation algorithm publicly accessible, allowing developers and users to examine how content is ranked and suggested on the platform. Owner Elon Musk announced that the updated algorithm will be open source within seven days, including the code that governs both organic and advertising post recommendations. Musk also indicated that this release will be repeated every four weeks, accompanied by detailed developer notes outlining changes from previous versions, providing continuous insight into the system’s inner workings.
The move toward transparency comes amid ongoing regulatory scrutiny. X’s recommendation system has attracted attention from authorities in France and the European Commission, which has extended a data retention order through 2026. Regulators have expressed concerns about accountability, particularly after incidents involving X’s AI chatbot, Grok, which generated inappropriate content and has been used to manipulate images in ways that raise privacy issues. These concerns underscore the broader challenges social media platforms face in managing content while maintaining transparency with users and regulators.
Musk has previously promised to open-source X’s algorithm following his takeover of Twitter. In 2023, partial code related to the platform’s For You feed was published on GitHub. Analysts at the time noted that the release lacked critical components and did not fully clarify recommendation processes, and it has not been updated since. The upcoming releases are expected to provide a more comprehensive view, addressing previous gaps and allowing external parties to better understand how content suggestions are generated.
The initiative aims to increase visibility into X’s internal operations while continuing to navigate public and regulatory concerns. Although the forthcoming open-source releases will include detailed developer notes and frequent updates, it remains uncertain how much they will resolve issues around content moderation, recommendation practices, and AI-driven interactions on the platform. By providing ongoing access to its algorithm, X seeks to balance transparency with operational control, while responding to scrutiny over both digital content and the mechanisms that determine what users see on the platform.
