Rawalpindi produces around 1000 tons of waste from the city and its surrounding villages that is regularly transferred to 600 canals of an open dumping point at Lusar adjacent to GT Road.
This is one of the major causes of air and underground pollution in the region, therefore in order to combat pollution, work on generating power through waste has officially begun. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has reportedly fixed Rs.8 as the rate of electricity per unit generated from this waste; according to a feasibility study, sought from different companies for the installation of modern waste disposal and energy plants.
The Punjab government is to provide the funding for the project. The Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid University for the power production from the waste generated in the garrison city.
