WhatsApp has rolled out an updated desktop app in Pakistan, replacing the previous native Windows version with a web-based application built on Microsoft’s WebView2 technology. This change aligns with updates already introduced in international markets and reflects Meta’s broader strategy of unifying its core platform across multiple operating systems. The new app provides a refined interface and integrates additional features, while also maintaining familiarity for users who rely heavily on WhatsApp for messaging, communication and online interactions. The update is being gradually made available, so users should ensure their app is up to date to access the new version once it reaches them.
The previous WhatsApp desktop for Windows was a native Universal Windows Platform application that offered faster response times but often struggled with performance issues, including lag and occasional crashes. The shift to a web-wrapper model means the updated desktop app essentially functions as a packaged version of WhatsApp Web. This approach simplifies development by allowing Meta to maintain a single core version for Windows, macOS and other systems rather than building separate native applications. While the move may initially raise concerns over resource usage, the unified platform is expected to streamline feature rollouts and long-term updates.
Performance considerations have emerged as a key discussion point among users. The WebView2 based app can consume up to 2GB of RAM under heavy use, a noticeable increase compared to the roughly 120 MB used by the previous native version during similar activity. This may affect performance on older or budget computers, though for many users, the previous native app also delivered inconsistent results. Despite higher memory usage, early reports indicate that the new interface feels smoother and more user friendly, offering improvements over the previous desktop experience.
The updated app introduces a simpler design with a more streamlined interface and settings layout, which may differ from the Windows 11 aesthetic. While some advanced features from the native version are less prominent, users benefit from new integrations including WhatsApp Channels, improved support for Status updates and Communities, and other usability enhancements. The web-based framework is expected to enable faster updates and future feature additions, bringing the desktop app closer in functionality to the web and mobile versions. Users who have not yet received the update are advised to monitor official channels and keep their applications current for access to the new WhatsApp desktop in Pakistan.
