Telenor Pakistan celebrated AI Day at its Islamabad headquarters with a series of interactive sessions, awards, discussions and an AI Expo, underscoring the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in reshaping industries, developing new skills and influencing society. The initiative was designed to raise awareness, encourage dialogue and provide practical insights into how AI can be responsibly applied across diverse sectors. The event brought together leaders, experts and employees to explore the transformative potential of AI and how it can be used to drive innovation while preparing the workforce for a digital-first future.
A key highlight of the day was the launch of “AI Verse,” an AI-focused learning path designed to equip employees with future-ready skills. The agenda also featured a panel discussion where industry leaders debated AI’s role in Pakistan’s economic growth and addressed regulatory challenges that accompany its adoption. To simplify learning and encourage widespread understanding of the technology, Telenor Pakistan introduced “AI for Everyone,” an introductory session on prompt engineering and practical AI tools. The AI Expo at the event showcased 10 ongoing AI projects, presented by the teams behind them, giving participants a first-hand look at how AI is being implemented across different functions.
Telenor Group also used the occasion to recognise innovation through its AI Awards. Among the winners was Telenor Pakistan’s project “Thunder,” which received the top honour in the AI for Innovation category for its pioneering application of AI in energy management. The AI Hackathon held as part of the group’s initiatives saw strong participation from Pakistan, with 105 teams submitting ideas—the second-highest number of entries across Telenor’s global operations. This reflected the depth of talent within the country and the organisation’s efforts to nurture it.
Fridjtof Rusten, CEO of Telenor Pakistan, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to using AI as an enabler for progress, stating that AI is no longer a distant concept but a force reshaping industries, redefining skills and transforming how people live and work. He said this represents a significant opportunity for Pakistan to embrace a digital-first approach and unlock new pathways for progress by ensuring the benefits of AI reach all parts of society. Awais Vohra, Chief Technology Officer at Telenor Pakistan, highlighted that AI is evolving from a specialised tool to a general-purpose technology with far-reaching impact across industries. For telecommunications, AI is a powerful enabler to plan and operate smart and efficient networks delivering personalised services. He stressed that Telenor Pakistan believes in ethical and transparent AI use aligned with human values and privacy protection. AI Day, he added, represents a step forward in creating a culture where employees can learn, experiment and apply AI responsibly to contribute to a sustainable future.
With initiatives such as AI Day, Telenor Pakistan is furthering its role in digital transformation, fostering collaboration between industry and talent and preparing Pakistan’s workforce to embrace the opportunities created by AI-driven change. By showcasing projects, learning paths and recognising innovation, the company is helping build an ecosystem where AI’s potential can be explored responsibly and effectively.
