Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja held a high-level meeting with Asian Development Bank President Masato Kanda in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to explore avenues for advancing Pakistan’s Digital Nation Vision. The discussion focused on enhancing collaboration on national digital infrastructure, including data centres, network development projects, and joint investment initiatives. Officials from both sides reviewed opportunities to strengthen regional connectivity and leverage Pakistan’s strategic location to serve as a digital hub within the CAREC Digital Corridor, supporting cross-border digital linkages across Central and South Asia.
During the meeting, Shaza Fatima Khawaja highlighted Pakistan’s National Fiberisation Plan and emphasized the need for results-based financing models to accelerate digital transformation. She proposed joint funding for high-impact projects across artificial intelligence, fintech, agritech, and health-tech sectors, seeking ADB’s technical assistance for pilot programs within the public sector. Both sides discussed mechanisms for financing and implementing initiatives that enhance national digital infrastructure, with a focus on sustainable investment and technology-driven economic growth. Pakistan’s proposals aimed at increasing digital accessibility, improving service delivery, and fostering innovation in priority sectors.
The conversation also addressed opportunities for regional cooperation, with both parties recognizing the potential for Pakistan to act as a gateway for digital trade and services. Strengthening connectivity through the CAREC Digital Corridor would position Pakistan as a key hub for cross-border data flows, enabling improved collaboration, investment, and knowledge exchange among neighboring countries. Officials discussed strategies for integrating public and private sector efforts to create scalable and efficient digital solutions that address national and regional needs, while supporting capacity building and technology adoption across various sectors.
Officials noted that joint financing and technical collaboration with ADB could accelerate Pakistan’s efforts to expand its digital economy, particularly in emerging technology areas. The discussions underscored the importance of leveraging international expertise to support domestic innovation, while aligning with national priorities outlined under Digital Pakistan. By fostering investment, providing technical guidance, and supporting pilot projects, ADB and Pakistan aim to strengthen the digital ecosystem, enhance public service delivery, and facilitate technology-driven growth that benefits both citizens and regional stakeholders.
