Rawalpindi has officially launched 45 electric buses on four new routes, marking the first phase of the city’s push toward modern and sustainable urban transport. The routes connect key areas, including Raja Bazaar to Koral Chowk, Saddar to Adiala Road, Munawar Colony, Saddar to Qabristan Chowk, and Marrir Chowk to 26 Number Chungi. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is scheduled to inaugurate the service, underscoring the provincial government’s commitment to improving public transport options while reducing pollution in one of the most congested districts of Punjab.

Preparations for the launch have been extensive, with a large canopy erected at the Old Waran Depot adjacent to the RTA office and security arrangements managed by local police. Charging stations have been installed at the Old Waran Bus Terminal in Saddar and the Green Bus Terminal in Chohar Chowk to ensure smooth operation of the electric fleet. Officials also confirmed that Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb may participate in the inauguration if required, and parliamentarians and key government officials have been invited to attend the ceremony.

Following the launch, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz will receive a detailed briefing at the Commissioner’s Office on Rawalpindi’s ongoing development projects and is expected to visit the Kacheri Chowk construction site. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to provide commuters with cleaner, quieter, and more reliable travel options. Officials highlighted that the electric bus service will help mitigate environmental challenges associated with traffic congestion while promoting sustainable urban mobility in Rawalpindi.

The introduction of these buses aligns with the government’s focus on modernizing public transport infrastructure and offering environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional vehicles. By connecting major areas of the city with reliable routes and advanced charging infrastructure, the project aims to enhance commuter convenience while supporting long-term sustainability goals. Authorities emphasized that the service is designed to improve accessibility for residents, encourage the use of public transport, and create a foundation for future expansion of electric bus networks across Punjab.
