Punjab University’s Faculty of Computing and Information Technology is set to inaugurate a Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Laboratory on October 7, as part of a broader academic and research collaboration between Pakistan and Turkiye. The laboratory has been established through cooperation between the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, Turkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and Punjab University, bringing together institutions from two countries to build a shared research facility. A high-level Turkish delegation will attend the inauguration ceremony, including TIKA Vice President Ali Ercan, while Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mahmood Saleem and other university officials are also expected to participate. During the event, guests will be briefed on the establishment of the laboratory, its activities so far, and its future plans, giving attendees a fuller picture of how the facility has been developed and what it is expected to deliver going forward.

The new facility will include modern computing and server infrastructure and will provide researchers, faculty members, and students from Pakistan and Turkiye with a platform to collaborate on artificial intelligence research and academic projects. Equipping the lab with dedicated computing and server hardware suggests the facility is intended to support substantive AI research work rather than serving purely as a teaching space, giving researchers from both countries access to infrastructure that individual departments might not otherwise be able to fund independently. Shared infrastructure of this kind can also make it easier for researchers from Punjab University and their Turkish counterparts to run joint experiments or training workloads without needing to rely on separate systems in their own countries.

The initiative is intended to strengthen cooperation in human-centered artificial intelligence while creating opportunities for joint research, knowledge sharing, and academic exchange. The focus on human-centered AI specifically points to a research emphasis on how AI systems are designed to work alongside and for the benefit of human users, an area of growing interest within the broader AI research community as the technology continues to expand into more aspects of daily life, from healthcare and education to public services and everyday consumer applications. Separately, Punjab University has also signed an academic and research cooperation agreement with Yildiz Technical University of Turkiye in the field of human-centered artificial intelligence, adding another layer of institutional partnership alongside the new laboratory. Agreements of this kind typically pave the way for faculty exchanges, joint publications, and collaborative research proposals between the partnering institutions, extending the relationship beyond the shared laboratory facility into broader academic cooperation between the two universities.

The ceremony will conclude with the presentation of commemorative gifts to the Turkish delegation, followed by a group photograph and the delegation’s departure. Taken together, the new laboratory and the agreement with Yildiz Technical University reflect a broader deepening of academic ties between Pakistani and Turkish institutions in the field of artificial intelligence research, adding to a growing network of international partnerships Pakistani universities have pursued in recent years to expand their research capacity in emerging technology fields.
