Punjab has introduced its first satellite-linked monitoring system to enhance environmental protection efforts, Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced. The cutting-edge system employs advanced technology and drone surveillance to detect environmental violations, marking a significant advancement in the province’s battle against pollution.
Already proving effective, the system led to the discovery of two factories in Gujranwala that were releasing harmful smoke. Located on Sheikhupura Road, the factories were swiftly shut down in coordinated raids conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection and district administration. The authorities dismantled the factories’ kilns and sealed the premises to prevent further damage.
Aurangzeb emphasized that under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s leadership, the province will strengthen its anti-smog campaign ahead of the smog season. Highlighting the urgency of tackling smog’s root causes, which claim approximately 250,000 lives annually in Pakistan, she urged citizens to join the province-wide efforts to combat smog and protect public health.
In a separate statement, Aurangzeb addressed the May 9 incidents, affirming that those responsible for planning and attacking the state will face inevitable punishment, with no consideration for leniency. She criticized individuals seeking relief under new NAB laws, which some claim were designed to shield the corrupt, pointing out the irony in their pleas for protection.
