Punjab government has approved the creation of its first dedicated anti-drone unit, allocating Rs3 billion to deploy advanced technologies capable of identifying, tracking, and neutralizing unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles. By integrating artificial intelligence into its radar and detection systems, the new unit is designed to handle the rising complexity of drone threats and provide a real-time, layered defense for sensitive areas. This marks a significant step in leveraging data-driven systems and automated responses to enhance security within the province.

The planned unit will employ a combination of radar detection, signal-jamming technologies, directed-energy capabilities, and rapid mobile response teams to safeguard critical infrastructure and public gatherings. Six radar installations will be strategically placed to monitor low-to-medium altitude airspace, feeding AI-enhanced analytics to classify drone types, flight paths, and threat levels. These systems will not only detect incoming unmanned aircraft but also predict movement patterns, allowing faster decision-making and minimizing manual oversight. Signal-jamming equipment will then disrupt drone control and navigation channels, forcing hostile or unauthorized drones to land or rendering them inoperable before they can pose a danger.

Directed-energy systems will add an extra layer of defense against drones that present higher risks, particularly those capable of carrying hazardous payloads. These systems, powered by precision targeting software, will neutralize drones without causing collateral damage, while mobile response teams will be on standby to intercept drones that bypass electronic countermeasures. This coordinated setup combines human expertise with AI-driven surveillance and response tools to deliver immediate, on-the-spot protection for sensitive sites, government buildings, and public events.

Officials involved in the project say the layered approach reflects an understanding that drone threats are evolving and require more than traditional security measures. By combining AI-enabled detection with real-time countermeasures, the province aims to create a proactive shield rather than a reactive response. This will strengthen security around high-risk locations, ensure better protection of citizens, and support Pakistan’s broader adoption of technology-led public safety initiatives. The anti-drone unit also complements national efforts to incorporate advanced data analytics, machine learning, and autonomous systems into law enforcement and public security frameworks.
