Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz recently made a groundbreaking announcement at the Fourth Edition of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum 2025 in Turkey, unveiling plans to establish Pakistan’s first AI University in Lahore. The Chief Minister emphasized that this forward-thinking initiative aims to revolutionize the educational landscape of Pakistan, aligning the country’s academic framework with the rapidly evolving technological demands of the 21st century.
During her speech at the forum, Maryam Nawaz underscored the increasing global importance of AI in shaping the future of education. She noted that AI-focused educational programs are no longer a luxury but a necessity for nations that wish to remain competitive in a technology-driven world.
“The promotion of AI-based education is changing the landscape of learning. With the establishment of Pakistan’s first AI university in Lahore, we are preparing our youth for a smarter, technology-driven future,”
she remarked. The university is set to be a hub of innovation and will play a central role in fostering an AI-literate generation that can contribute to the country’s economic and technological growth. The AI university initiative is part of a broader set of educational reforms championed by the Chief Minister since she assumed office in March 2024. Maryam Nawaz highlighted that her administration has been building on the foundation laid by former Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif, with a focus on driving forward economic development and enhancing education and health infrastructures.
In addition to the establishment of the AI university, several key educational reforms have been introduced across Punjab. Over 4,000 primary schools have been upgraded, and digital learning rooms featuring touchscreens have replaced traditional chalkboards in 6,000 schools. This shift aims to bridge the technological divide in rural and urban schools and ensure that students across the province have access to modern learning tools. The Chief Minister also announced the reopening of previously closed schools, ensuring that children from all backgrounds have access to quality education.
Maryam Nawaz’s government has also launched merit-based scholarships to support talented students. The introduction of 50,000 such scholarships will help ensure that financial barriers do not limit access to higher education. A daily milk program has been initiated in schools to combat malnutrition, and 30,000 new teachers have been recruited based on merit. The Chief Minister also introduced the concept of “Nawaz Sharif Internet City,” which she described as the new face of Digital Pakistan. In her speech, Maryam Nawaz paid tribute to the Turkish First Lady Emine Erdoğan and praised the efforts of the Maarif Foundation for organizing the Antalya Diplomacy Forum. She took the opportunity to highlight the strong ties between Pakistan and Turkey, stating that both nations share a unified spirit and vision for the future. She also expressed her solidarity with the people of Turkey and emphasized that the Pakistani delegation at the forum brought a message of love and friendship from the people of Punjab.
Beyond her educational reforms, Maryam Nawaz used her platform at the forum to address the global humanitarian crises, especially those impacting children. She drew attention to the dire situations in conflict zones, particularly in Palestine, Afghanistan, occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and Sudan, where children are suffering the consequences of violence, deprivation, and war.
