Punjab Government has approved a Rs3 billion initiative to deploy advanced fog cannons mounted on electric trucks as part of intensified efforts to address smog and rising air pollution levels across major cities and industrial zones. The plan forms a key component of the province’s broader clean air and climate resilience strategy, which aims to reduce airborne pollutants while strengthening institutional capacity for environmental protection. Officials stated that the decision reflects growing concern over the health and economic impacts of poor air quality, particularly during peak smog seasons that affect large urban populations.

Under the approved plan, 30 modern fog cannons mounted on electric vehicles will be deployed in areas identified as high risk due to industrial activity, construction dust, and traffic congestion. These vehicles are designed to suppress dust particles and reduce the concentration of hazardous matter in the air through targeted spraying, while the use of electric trucks is intended to limit additional emissions. Authorities said the deployment strategy will focus on urban centers and industrial hubs where pollution levels consistently exceed safe thresholds. The integration of electric mobility with pollution control technology is expected to support cleaner operations while aligning with broader sustainability goals.

Alongside the province wide initiative, the government has allocated Rs2.25 billion under the Lahore Air Improvement Framework to strengthen air quality management in the provincial capital Lahore. A central feature of this program is the introduction of a super station system that will, for the first time, enable authorities to identify pollution sources in real time. This capability is expected to support quicker regulatory responses and more targeted enforcement actions. The Lahore program also includes implementation of a One City One Policy model, aimed at streamlining air quality governance by consolidating regulatory frameworks and modernizing institutional processes related to pollution control.

Across Punjab, the environmental monitoring network has been significantly expanded, with more than 50 modern air quality monitoring units already installed in various locations. These units are supported by an automated quality assurance mechanism designed to improve data accuracy, reliability, and transparency. In addition, a digital environmental monitoring system is being activated to provide continuous oversight of industrial emissions. This system is expected to enhance compliance monitoring by enabling authorities to track emission levels remotely and identify violations more efficiently, reducing dependence on manual inspections alone.

To further strengthen enforcement capacity, the government has approved the upgradation of environmental laboratories across the province. This includes the installation of advanced analytical equipment and the establishment of dedicated forensic facilities for emissions testing. These upgrades are intended to support more precise analysis of pollutants and provide stronger technical evidence for regulatory action. Officials noted that improved laboratory capacity is essential for effective implementation of environmental regulations, particularly as monitoring systems generate increasing volumes of real time data.

To coordinate and oversee these initiatives, an Environment and Climate Delivery Unit is being established at the provincial level. The unit will monitor progress through a centralized digital dashboard, track key performance indicators, and ensure alignment with environmental targets set by the government. Officials expressed confidence that the combined measures, ranging from electric fog cannon deployment to digital monitoring and institutional strengthening, will contribute to meaningful reductions in smog levels, improve public health outcomes, and support long term environmental sustainability across Punjab.
