PTA has informed the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that ten out of fifteen Long-Distance International (LDI) companies owe a total of Rs. 74 billion in unpaid dues.
PTA Chairman warned that revoking the licenses of these companies could severely disrupt telecommunication services, impacting 50% of mobile services and 40% of ATM services.
To reduce reliance on foreign fiber-optic infrastructure, PTA highlighted the importance of the National Fiberization Policy. This policy aims to build a robust domestic fiber-optic network, minimizing vulnerability to external pressures.
The meeting also discussed the Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Bill 2024 and the challenges of regulating AI in the context of social media and fake news. Some participants suggested following China’s model of creating alternative platforms as a regulatory measure.
Concerns were also raised regarding the appointment of the new Secretary for IT and Telecom. The Establishment Division clarified that experience was prioritized over qualifications. The committee emphasized the need for improvements in the telecom and IT sectors, particularly in terms of exports.
