PTA has reported substantial progress in the telecommunications sector during the fiscal year 2023-24, showcasing significant developments across broadband services, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure. One of the most notable advancements highlighted by PTA is the major increase in broadband internet subscriptions, which reached an impressive 142.3 million. This marks a 91% increase over the past five years, reflecting the growing demand for internet connectivity across Pakistan.

Broadband penetration in the country now stands at 58.4%, a substantial leap from previous years, underscoring the success of various initiatives aimed at expanding internet access. This growth is supported by the operation of 55,777 cell sites, 95.5% of which are 4G-enabled, ensuring faster and more reliable internet access. The implementation of the National Fiberization Plan has further strengthened connectivity across the nation, laying the groundwork for the future introduction of 5G technology.

PTA also made strides in improving connectivity speeds and network capabilities with the introduction of a 6GHz spectrum band for unlicensed use. This development positions Pakistan as the 10th country in Asia to adopt next-generation Wi-Fi technology, offering faster and more efficient connectivity. Looking forward, the PTA has initiated the 5G rollout process, with plans for mid-2025 implementation. The introduction of 5G is expected to bring about transformative advancements in key sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, and the development of smart cities.

Another significant initiative by PTA during this period was the implementation of the Three-Factor Authentication system to curb SIM-related fraud. In an effort to improve accountability and reduce unauthorized SIM issuance, PTA introduced several measures, including the Multi-Finger Biometric Verification System. These initiatives, along with extended buffer times for new SIM activations, have resulted in a dramatic reduction in fraudulent SIM activities. As part of its data-cleansing initiative, PTA also blocked over 5.8 million inactive SIM cards, further securing the telecom ecosystem.

Cybersecurity has also been a priority for PTA, with the authority making strides in strengthening Pakistan’s digital security framework. In the Global Cybersecurity Index, Pakistan’s ranking improved significantly, rising from 79th to 40th place. This advancement is a testament to the PTA’s commitment to enhancing cybersecurity through various initiatives, including the establishment of a tier-3 Data Center and a National Telecom Security Operations Center. These measures, along with collaborations with international partners, have further bolstered the telecom sector’s resilience against cyber threats.

In addition to cybersecurity, PTA has focused on child online protection initiatives. As part of its collaboration with UNICEF’s ‘Disrupting Harm Programme,’ the PTA conducted digital literacy training in 100 schools, raising awareness about online safety among students. The PTA also partnered with Meta to launch the Urdu version of the ‘TakeItDown’ portal, which provides a platform for reporting harmful online content, further protecting children from digital risks.

PTA’s annual report also underscores its efforts in advancing digital transformation in line with the Digital Pakistan vision. Initiatives like quality-of-service surveys and support for local manufacturing have contributed to the country’s economic growth. Notably, 94% of mobile devices in Pakistan are now produced locally, a significant achievement that strengthens the local telecom sector and reduces dependence on imports.

Overall, PTA’s achievements in 2023-24 reflect a strong commitment to enhancing Pakistan’s telecommunications infrastructure, expanding internet access, improving digital security, and fostering economic growth through local manufacturing. These efforts have set a solid foundation for the country’s digital future, positioning it for continued growth and innovation in the coming years.
