ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strong warning to mobile users across the country that non-registered mobile phones may soon be blocked permanently from Pakistani networks. The announcement follows a high-alert campaign launched by the authority to stop unregistered devices from operating in Pakistan. Officials have stressed that using unregistered phones is not only a regulatory violation but can also expose users to significant security and legal risks. According to PTA, registering mobile phones is a basic requirement for personal safety and for maintaining national security, as unregistered devices are often used in illegal activities including smuggling and fraud.
The authority has highlighted several serious concerns linked to unregistered mobile phones, including potential threats to national security, their use in financial fraud and cybercrimes, and the illegal smuggling of unsafe mobile devices into the country. PTA has also warned that buying or selling unregistered phones is a punishable offense and that strict action is being taken to curb such practices. Time is running out for users of unregistered devices as the regulator has made it clear that these phones will soon be permanently blocked from local networks if they are not registered promptly.
To assist mobile users, PTA has outlined the steps for checking and registering their devices. Users can begin by finding their device’s IMEI number by dialing *06# on their phone. For dual-SIM phones, both IMEI numbers should be noted. After obtaining the IMEI, users can check their device status either by sending the IMEI number via SMS to 8484 or by visiting the DIRBS PTA Portal online and entering the IMEI to confirm if the device is already registered. If not, users are required to register their device at the DIRBS portal. Registration involves signing up with a CNIC, NICOP, or Passport number along with an email and phone number, logging in with the provided credentials, applying for a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) by entering the IMEI number(s), and submitting the application.
Once the application is submitted, users must pay the applicable taxes through online banking, ATMs, or designated bank branches. An SMS or email confirmation will be sent once the device is successfully registered. PTA has also clarified that overseas Pakistanis can register one device per year tax-free if brought as accompanied baggage, provided it is registered within 60 days of arrival. Visitors and foreign nationals are allowed temporary registration for up to 120 days without tax. Dual-SIM devices require registration of both IMEI numbers to avoid partial blocking. These measures reflect PTA’s ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with national regulations and to protect consumers from the risks associated with unregistered mobile devices.
