Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in line with their Telecom Policy 2015 launched their Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS). The initial deadline for the completion of phase 1 of the project set by the authority was 29th June 2018.
However, it is being reported that the deadline now has been extended to 1st August 2018 according to the request of various stakeholders. The second phase of the project therefore will now begin on the 31st of August with no further extensions for phase 1.
In the second phase full blocking is to be implemented for all non-compliant devices that are not PTA type approved.
DIRBS has been developed to identify sub-standard, fake, and illegally imported mobile phones, register and block non-compliant devices on mobile phone networks. This unique system will curb illegal imports, and facilitate legitimate device importers, and mobile device users. DIRBS and its successful implementation are to benefit the entire mobile ecosystem of Pakistan.
