Maj Gen (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman, Chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, paid an official visit to Telenor Group’s headquarters in Norway during his participation in the UN Internet Governance Forum. The visit aimed at exploring global best practices and future-ready advancements in the telecom sector while strengthening international collaboration around digital transformation and critical communications infrastructure.

During the visit, the Chairman held a high-level meeting with Telenor Group’s Chief Financial Officer, where the two sides discussed strategic directions for telecom development, regional cooperation, and regulatory synergies. He also met with the Group Head of External Relations, People and Strategy, with discussions focused on how telecommunications can support secure national infrastructure and enable robust digital ecosystems.

The engagement included a detailed demonstration of 5G and artificial intelligence use cases, offering real-time insights into their applications in various sectors such as healthcare, mobility, and smart city infrastructure. These examples illustrated the role next-generation technologies can play in advancing public services, improving urban efficiency, and supporting inclusive socio-economic growth.

One of the key sessions during the visit focused on spectrum allocation practices in Nordic countries. The Chairman was briefed on efficient spectrum planning models and sustainable regulatory frameworks adopted across the region. These discussions provided valuable input for aligning Pakistan’s telecom regulations with global practices, particularly in managing spectrum as a national asset critical to enabling advanced mobile technologies.

The visit is part of PTA’s broader agenda to modernize Pakistan’s digital regulatory environment and enhance partnerships with leading global telecom operators. By engaging with Telenor’s senior leadership, PTA continues to build institutional understanding of global innovation trends and to position Pakistan’s telecom framework to benefit from emerging technologies.

Pakistan’s telecom sector is experiencing rapid evolution, and regulatory bodies are actively working to address emerging needs in connectivity, digital access, and service innovation. PTA’s focus on learning from international examples underscores its effort to ensure that policy frameworks remain adaptive and forward-looking.

Through direct interaction with global telecom leaders and exposure to pioneering technology deployments, the visit reflects PTA’s commitment to enabling high-quality, secure, and future-oriented telecommunications services in Pakistan. The insights gained from Norway’s model and Telenor’s innovation roadmap are expected to inform PTA’s approach toward spectrum efficiency, infrastructure resilience, and inclusive digital expansion.
