The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has officially launched its e-challan system in Gujranwala, marking another major step in the province’s efforts to digitize traffic management and promote safer road practices. This expansion brings Gujranwala into the growing network of cities operating under PSCA’s advanced traffic monitoring framework, designed to ensure smoother traffic flow and reduce violations through automated digital surveillance. The initiative reflects Punjab’s broader commitment to integrating technology into urban governance and public safety systems.
With the system now active, over 1,066 high-definition cameras installed across Gujranwala will monitor traffic in real time, identifying and recording violations such as riding without a helmet, driving without a seatbelt, using unauthorized number plates, and other infractions. Once a violation is detected, the system automatically generates a challan that is sent to the offender via SMS, ensuring a swift and transparent penalty process. A PSCA spokesperson stated that the city’s existing surveillance infrastructure, which had already been supporting law enforcement in tracking suspects and criminal activities, will now also be leveraged to enforce road discipline and enhance safety standards on the streets.
SP Safe City Authority Gujranwala, Irfan Salhriya, confirmed that the e-challan system had undergone extensive testing over the past two months to ensure technical stability and accuracy before becoming fully operational. He added that from this week onward, the city’s traffic violations are being monitored continuously through automated systems. While traditional ticketing by traffic wardens will continue, it will now be complemented by automated enforcement to ensure consistency and accountability in rule implementation. Salhriya highlighted that violators who fail to pay fines within the stipulated time may face doubled penalties or legal proceedings, underscoring the system’s role in maintaining strict compliance.
According to PSCA officials, the expansion of the e-challan system to Gujranwala represents another key milestone in Punjab’s transition toward a digital governance model. The initiative not only improves road safety but also helps authorities collect accurate data on traffic behavior and city-wide mobility patterns, which can inform future urban planning and policy measures. The use of intelligent surveillance technology enables better management of congestion points and enhances coordination between law enforcement agencies.
