The Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme has officially been launched across Sindh, with the inauguration ceremony held at NED University Karachi, marking the beginning of the distribution of 20,000 laptops to students throughout the province. The initiative is part of the federal government’s broader efforts to strengthen access to digital tools in higher education and support young people in developing technology driven skills. By providing students with personal computing devices, the programme aims to bridge digital gaps, enhance academic productivity, and enable learners to engage more effectively with online resources and modern learning platforms.
Federal Government Spokesperson for Sindh Affairs Raja Khaliq Zaman Ansari addressed the launch event, emphasizing that youth education remains a central pillar of national development. He noted that access to modern technology is no longer optional in today’s academic environment, particularly as research, coursework, and professional skill building increasingly rely on digital platforms. According to Ansari, equipping students with laptops will not only improve learning outcomes but also prepare them for careers in information technology, engineering, research, and other knowledge based sectors that are critical to Pakistan’s economic growth.
Ansari also highlighted that the Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme had been discontinued in 2018 and has now been restored by the current federal government with a renewed emphasis on transparency and effective implementation. He credited the leadership of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme for reviving the initiative and ensuring that distribution mechanisms are designed to reach deserving students fairly. The restoration reflects a policy shift toward practical educational support, moving beyond short term interventions and focusing on long term capacity building through digital access.
The spokesperson further stated that the laptops will play an important role in supporting students’ research activities, IT related learning, and advanced academic work. With many universities adopting digital classrooms, online journals, virtual labs, and cloud based collaboration tools, having personal devices is essential for full participation in modern education systems. He added that the federal government is taking concrete steps to ensure students in Sindh are fully included in national education and technology initiatives, reinforcing the principle of equal access to digital resources across provinces.
The launch in Sindh forms part of a nationwide rollout of the PM Laptop Scheme, which is expected to benefit thousands of students enrolled in public sector universities and higher education institutions. Officials believe the programme will help reduce barriers faced by students from lower income backgrounds who may not otherwise be able to afford personal computing devices. By integrating technology directly into students’ academic lives, the government aims to strengthen digital literacy, promote innovation, and support the development of a skilled workforce aligned with the demands of a rapidly evolving digital economy.
Ansari reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to continuing education focused policies and supporting young people through tangible initiatives rather than symbolic measures. He emphasized that sustained investment in youth and technology is essential for national progress, adding that programmes like the PM Laptop Scheme are designed to empower students with tools that have long term academic and professional value. The initiative is expected to play a significant role in enhancing digital inclusion and strengthening Pakistan’s higher education landscape.
