Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the federal government will provide free electric bikes to high-achieving students across all educational boards in Pakistan, including the Federal Board. This initiative is part of a broader national effort to promote clean and affordable transportation, while also recognizing academic excellence and supporting the country’s youth. The decision was made during a high-level meeting on the promotion of electric vehicles held on Friday, where the prime minister chaired discussions with federal ministers and senior officials.
As part of the government’s electric mobility strategy, this student-focused initiative will be accompanied by targeted efforts to support economically disadvantaged communities. Special provisions will be made for individuals in need by offering electric rickshaws and loaders under favourable terms, helping create employment opportunities and reducing dependence on fuel imports. The scheme is being developed with a comprehensive plan to make electric vehicles accessible through subsidised loans and easy financing options.
Officials revealed that over 100,000 electric bikes and 300,000 electric loaders will be made available on easy terms across the country. The prime minister directed that 25% of the entire quota be allocated specifically for women, and that provincial quotas be distributed in accordance with population-based ratios. He also instructed that Balochistan’s share be increased to 10%, aiming to ensure inclusivity and regional equity.
To complement these efforts, the government is laying the groundwork for a full-fledged electric vehicle ecosystem within the country. Four battery manufacturing companies are set to begin operations in Pakistan, which will help establish a domestic supply chain and foster local industry. These developments are also expected to generate jobs and support skills development in the emerging EV sector.
In line with good governance, the prime minister has ordered third-party validation of the distribution and implementation process to maintain transparency and accountability. Additionally, a national public awareness campaign is being launched to educate citizens on the benefits and procedures associated with the EV initiative, aiming to boost awareness and uptake.
PM Shehbaz emphasized that all electric bikes, rickshaws, and loaders distributed under the scheme must adhere to strict safety and quality standards to ensure durability and user safety. The move reflects a policy direction toward sustainable transport options and aligns with Pakistan’s broader environmental and energy efficiency goals.
Present at the meeting were Federal Ministers Ahad Khan Cheema and Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, Chief Coordinator Mosharraf Zaidi, and senior representatives from relevant government departments, all of whom pledged support for the rollout of the initiative.
