Zakat and charitable giving have long been central to the social and spiritual fabric of Pakistan, forming a vital aspect of Islamic practice and community support. Traditionally, this has involved in-person contributions and direct support to those in need, but technological innovations are now redefining the landscape. Despite ongoing economic challenges, Pakistan has consistently demonstrated a strong culture of giving. According to the Pakistan Giving Report 2025, 73 percent of citizens contributed to social causes in 2024, donating an average of 1.64 percent of their income, well above the global average of 1.04 percent. Collaborative research with ICTD and LUMS indicates that over 50 million Pakistanis donated approximately PKR 619 billion (US$2.19 billion) in Zakat during the same year, reflecting the country’s enduring philanthropic spirit.
The holy month of Ramadan amplifies this spirit, as charitable engagement peaks across communities, welfare initiatives, and nonprofit organizations. While personal, direct donations remain common, a shift toward structured and transparent channels is emerging. This trend is being supported by Pakistan’s financial sector, particularly Islamic banks and digital banking platforms, which offer accessible, secure, and traceable methods for donations. By integrating technology with established charitable practices, banks are enabling donors to contribute without the constraints of physical visits, manual paperwork, or handling cash, simplifying the process for millions of users.
One significant milestone has been the State Bank of Pakistan’s Roshan Samaaji Khidmat initiative, which allows overseas Pakistanis with Roshan Digital Accounts to make Zakat and charitable contributions digitally to approved organizations. This initiative expands the reach of philanthropy globally while maintaining accountability and transparency. Domestically, banks such as Faysal Bank have strengthened this transition through their fully Shariah-compliant digital platforms. The DigiBank app provides users with curated lists of verified charitable organizations and enables Zakat payments and donations instantly, ensuring contributions are routed ethically and efficiently.
The combination of religious adherence, technological infrastructure, and financial oversight is creating a robust ecosystem for charitable giving in Pakistan. During Ramadan, when donation volumes surge, these digital platforms play a critical role in ensuring contributions reach beneficiaries quickly and safely. With Zakat contributions exceeding PKR 619 billion annually, the shift to digital solutions is enhancing both the efficiency and transparency of Pakistan’s philanthropic efforts. Platforms such as Roshan Samaaji Khidmat and Faysal Bank’s DigiBank demonstrate how technology can complement tradition, allowing faith-driven generosity to thrive in a modern, secure, and globally connected context.
