There are now over 217 million Pakistani accounts on social networking sites.

Pakistanis have 217.1 million profiles across various social media platforms, translating to 70.1 million active users, according to a survey by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

With 71.7 million users, YouTube leads the pack in Pakistan, followed by Facebook (57.5 million users). While Snapchat has 18.8 million local accounts, SnackVideo has 20 million Pakistani users.

In Pakistan, there are 18.3 million TikTok users, 15.6 million Instagram users, and 7.6 million LinkedIn users. Twitter has 3.4 million users, compared to 4.2 million on Bigo and Likee, two other social media networks.

According to the authority, PTA and the Pakistani government’s backing of internet users and tech businesses and creation of an enabling environment have led to a growth in the number of social media users in Pakistan. As part of the government’s “Digital Pakistan” initiative, PTA has supported and facilitated the social media sector, which has improved meaningful connectivity and accessibility.

New social media regulations have been developed after consultation with social media firms and all interested parties. According to the Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight, and Safeguards) Rules, 2021, PTA has continuously urged social media businesses to register with the relevant government.

The conclusion of negotiations with TikTok representatives has previously been announced by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. In the next weeks, the firm will open an office in Islamabad. Additionally, Facebook will open a branch in Pakistan. Both the Ministry and PTA continue to interact with other social media platforms.
