Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced that Pakistan’s ports will integrate Artificial Intelligence into their operations by August 14 as part of a wider push toward digitalization, transparency, and innovation in the maritime sector. Speaking during the National Assembly’s question-hour session, he dismissed claims of inefficiency in port management, noting that ports act as facilitators for cargo movement and their performance is tied directly to the country’s industrial and trade activity. Highlighting recent performance, Chaudhry stated that ports generated a record profit of Rs109.7 billion despite challenges and underutilization concerns.
The minister detailed that the Ministry for Maritime Affairs is implementing a new AI-based system, known as the Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS), making it the first federal ministry to introduce AI at an operational level. The initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s recently established AI policy and is expected to make port operations more efficient, transparent, and technologically advanced. Chaudhry also pointed to ongoing work on the Port Community System and the Pakistan Single Window, aimed at addressing delays, reducing leakages, and eliminating inefficiencies in customs clearance processes.
In response to parliamentary concerns about port-related thefts, Chaudhry said the ministry is collaborating closely with FBR and Pakistan Customs to improve security, streamline clearance procedures, and ensure policy integration. He emphasized that his ministry is both receiving and providing guidance to relevant authorities to strengthen operational controls. Additionally, he noted that work is underway on a new bunkering policy to enhance Pakistan’s maritime fuel supply chain, with the aim of attracting international investment and participation.
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to accountability and progress in the maritime sector, expressing appreciation for the positive feedback from parliamentarians on recent improvements. He assured that modernization efforts, including AI integration and digital transformation, are intended to make Pakistan’s ports more competitive, adaptable, and capable of supporting future trade growth.
