IT and IT-enabled Services (ITeS) sector has made a major contribution to the country’s export revenue during the fiscal year 2023-24. Pakistan’s ICT export remittance inflows amounted to a record-high US$ 3.223 billion, representing 10.5 percent of the total export value and accounting for 41.3 percent of the total export of services. This remarkable achievement showcases the growing influence and potential of the IT sector as a key player in Pakistan’s economic landscape.
Minister of State for IT, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, revealed this data in a written reply to the Senate, highlighting the sector’s robust performance. The ICT sector not only achieved impressive export figures but also recorded a trade surplus of US$ 2.827 billion, which represents 87.71 percent of the total ICT export remittances. This surplus saw a notable increase of 22.31 percent compared to the previous year, when the surplus stood at US$ 2.297 billion.
In a stark contrast to the ICT sector’s success, the overall services sector in Pakistan recorded a trade deficit of US$ 2.313 billion during the same period. This highlights the growing importance of the ICT industry as a pillar for Pakistan’s economic stability and growth.
The ICT sector has consistently proven to be one of the fastest-growing industries in Pakistan, maintaining a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 22 percent over the past five years. This growth rate not only places the sector at the forefront of Pakistan’s services industry but also positions it as one of the most dynamic sectors contributing to national revenue generation.
The fiscal year 2023-24 marked a milestone for Pakistan’s ICT exports, which grew by an impressive 24.15 percent, with export remittances increasing by US$ 627 million compared to the previous fiscal year’s figure of US$ 2.596 billion. The increase in ICT exports significantly outpaced the overall export growth of 10.5 percent, underscoring the potential for the sector to continue its upward trajectory in the coming years.
Pakistan’s government has been actively supporting the ICT sector through a range of initiatives and policies aimed at fostering its growth. Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja mentioned that the momentum in ICT export growth has continued into the first half of FY25, with remittances surging by 28 percent to US$ 1.86 billion, compared to US$ 1.45 billion during the same period in the previous year.
This upward trend in ICT export remittances is also reflected in the performance of the sector in December 2024, when ICT services export remittances reached US$ 348 million. This marked a 14.8 percent increase from December 2023 and a 12.2 percent month-on-month growth from November 2024, when remittances stood at US$ 310 million.
To sustain this positive growth trajectory, the Ministry of IT and Telecom (MoITT) is focusing on a range of strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the sector’s global competitiveness. These initiatives include workforce development, investment in modern infrastructure, and aggressive marketing strategies targeting international markets. The government is also fostering collaborations with global tech firms to create opportunities for Pakistani businesses to expand their reach in the global market.
The comprehensive approach being implemented by the MoITT also includes skill development programs to equip the workforce with the necessary skills required to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving global technology landscape. These initiatives are expected to not only enhance the capacity of Pakistan’s IT professionals but also enable them to tap into new markets and emerging trends within the global tech ecosystem.
