Pakistan has formally inaugurated its 5G spectrum auction, marking a significant step in the country’s journey toward advanced digital connectivity. The ceremony was attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister of Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja, and Attaullah Tarar, alongside the chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. Officials confirmed that three telecom companies have qualified to participate in the bidding process, with around six hundred megahertz of spectrum being offered by PTA to support the rollout of 5G services.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb described the launch as a milestone for Pakistan’s digital economy, noting that spectrum availability has long been a critical challenge for telecom development. He highlighted that coordination between PTA and the Frequency Allocation Board played a crucial role in enabling the auction. Aurangzeb further announced the abolition of Right of Way charges for fiber deployment, which previously stood at approximately thirty-six thousand rupees per kilometre. The move is expected to encourage investment by telecom operators and accelerate the expansion of digital infrastructure across the country.
IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja emphasized that Pakistan first entered the era of 3G and 4G during the government of Nawaz Sharif between 2013 and 2014 and is now preparing to adopt 5G technologies while enhancing existing 4G services. She explained that the removal of Right of Way fees would facilitate faster fiberization nationwide, improving network efficiency and coverage. According to the minister, enhancements to 4G services are expected within the next four to five months, whereas 5G services could become available in major urban centres within approximately six months, offering faster connectivity and supporting next-generation applications.
PTA officials outlined the auction process, noting that the first round of bidding will run for sixty minutes. The auction is structured to take place in two stages over five rounds, allowing the participating operators to compete for spectrum allocation effectively. Government representatives highlighted that faster connectivity through 5G will enable new technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, strengthening digital services including online education, remote work, and enterprise solutions. The 5G rollout is expected to provide both businesses and consumers with improved mobile internet performance, supporting Pakistan’s digital transformation and overall technological development.
This auction represents a coordinated effort by Pakistan’s authorities to bridge digital gaps, attract investment in telecom infrastructure, and position the country for the next generation of connectivity solutions. With strategic planning and active participation from industry stakeholders, Pakistan’s entry into 5G is set to create opportunities for innovation, enhance digital services, and improve the efficiency of existing networks across the nation.
