The interim government has announced yet another initiative set to launch on January 12, 2024, offering an installment plan for iPhones to the public. Dr Umar Saif, the Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology, shared details of this collaboration with telecom stakeholders, a concept unveiled in October 2023. Recognizing the financial constraints faced by many, Dr. Saif stressed the program’s necessity to make premium smartphones more accessible to the Pakistani population.
The primary goal of this initiative is to provide individuals with access to the latest smartphone models through convenient and affordable installment plans. Notably, iPhones are included among the devices covered by this offering. To ensure compliance with installment payments, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will enforce the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking Systems (DIRBS), potentially blocking handsets in cases of defaulting on payments.
Dr. Umar Saif emphasized that this policy aims to encourage responsible financial behavior while expanding smartphone accessibility across diverse income brackets. Telecom companies are poised to play a crucial role, offering smartphones directly to consumers through structured installment plans, thereby extending the benefits of mobile broadband, particularly to lower-income segments of society.
