NASTP has announced an ambitious expansion with nine new radar and sensor programs, marking a significant step in the country’s defense technology advancements. The announcement was made through a promotional video by the PAF, which highlighted President Asif Ali Zardari’s visit to a NASTP facility. These new programs include the development of a passive radar, a multi-function radar, and an airborne early warning (AEW) radar, all of which will enhance Pakistan’s surveillance and detection capabilities.
NASTP’s work is not limited to new developments; it has also successfully upgraded over 40 radars for the Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy, and even international clients. These upgrades reflect Pakistan’s growing expertise in radar and sensor technology, a field that has seen increasing attention since the mid-2010s. One of the major breakthroughs in this journey was the local upgrade of Siemens Mobile Pulse Doppler Radar (MPDR) systems, where NASTP integrated solid transmitters from Germany’s Hensoldt in 2019. This transformation allowed legacy mechanically scanned radars to evolve into phased array systems, significantly improving detection and tracking accuracy.
In recent years, NASTP has accelerated its innovation efforts, unveiling new homegrown radar systems to meet modern defense requirements. By 2024, the organization introduced the SR-3D, a short-range S-band air defense radar designed to strengthen Pakistan’s air defense network. Further advancements are expected with a longer-range variant projected for completion by 2026. Additionally, NASTP has made notable progress in passive sensor technology, which enables real-time tracking of over 200 targets across a range exceeding 400 kilometers. This technology is particularly valuable for air defense, as it allows for early threat detection without emitting signals that could be intercepted by adversaries.
These developments underscore Pakistan’s strategic push towards self-reliance in defense technology, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers while also opening avenues for defense exports. With growing regional security challenges, the ability to develop and deploy advanced radar systems provides a crucial advantage in maintaining airspace security. The continued expansion of NASTP’s capabilities signals Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its aerospace and defense industry, positioning the country as a serious player in radar and sensor technology.
