Pakistan has been recognized among the top 20 most improved countries in the updated GSMA Mobile Connectivity Index (MCI), reflecting significant efforts by MoITT, PTA, and other government stakeholders to boost digital access across the country. The index, which measures the performance of 173 countries based on infrastructure, affordability, consumer readiness, and availability of content and services, is available for public access at https://www.mobileconnectivityindex.com/index.html.

According to GSMA’s “State of Mobile Internet Connectivity Report 2024,” more people than ever are now accessing the internet through mobile devices. By the end of 2023, mobile internet usage had grown to 4.6 billion individuals, representing 57% of the global population. Despite this increase, the pace of growth in mobile internet adoption has remained largely flat in recent years, with digital divides continuing to impact large segments of the population worldwide.

GSMA notes that 39% of the global population currently lives in areas with mobile broadband coverage but still do not use it, creating what is referred to as the usage gap. An additional 4% of the population remains entirely uncovered by mobile broadband networks, constituting the coverage gap. These disparities limit the broader socioeconomic potential of mobile connectivity and highlight the importance of policy and regulatory frameworks that support inclusive digital growth.

The 2024 report offers a detailed analysis of trends affecting global mobile connectivity and provides insights into the challenges that prevent wider adoption. For the first time, the report examines barriers to more advanced usage of mobile internet, as well as issues related to children’s connectivity and the economic implications of addressing the usage gap. Recommendations are provided to help stakeholders focus on removing these persistent barriers and improving digital inclusion across all population segments.

Pakistan’s improved standing in the Mobile Connectivity Index suggests a growing commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure and promoting user engagement with mobile internet services. Progress in affordability and consumer readiness indicates that nationwide initiatives have started to show results, and the coordinated work of government departments is helping to create a more connected digital society.

GSMA’s Mobile Connectivity Index continues to be a key tool for policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers, offering country-level data and a framework for assessing mobile internet adoption as part of the mobile industry’s broader initiative to accelerate digital inclusion.
