Pakistan Railways has taken a step forward in its digital transformation journey through a strategic collaboration with Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), signing a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at modernizing its infrastructure and enhancing commuter experience. The initiative includes the planned introduction of free WiFi services on trains, along with broader integration of digital management systems, positioning Pakistan Railways to align more closely with the federal government’s digitization goals.
Announced by Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi during a press briefing at the Divisional Superintendent’s office, the agreement is part of a broader effort to streamline railway operations and improve the quality of service delivery across the country. The Ministry of Railways has made clear its intent to embed digital tools across key operational and passenger touchpoints, marking a shift in how traditional services are delivered to a growing, tech-savvy population.
Alongside the digital plans, Abbasi revealed that the ministry is focused on three essential areas: service punctuality, improved food standards, and enhanced cleanliness both at stations and onboard. The new digital infrastructure, supported by PITB, is expected to contribute to the real-time monitoring and management of these priorities, creating a more responsive and transparent rail system.
In parallel to these developments, Pakistan and Russia are preparing to launch a direct rail link beginning June 22. The move signals growing economic cooperation between the two nations. Additionally, Russia has shown interest in investing in Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM), further expanding its economic footprint in the country. While this new international rail service reflects growing connectivity, the Ministry’s technological upgrades underscore its commitment to future-ready operations.
A total of 200 railway carriages are also under development and are expected to be fully operational by 2027. These will likely be integrated with the updated digital services under the new infrastructure plan. The minister emphasized that digital transformation will not only enhance commuter experience but also drive operational efficiency and transparency across Pakistan Railways.
Another element of the modernization initiative includes a green collaboration with the Forest Department to plant fruit-bearing trees along railway tracks. This environmentally-conscious move is in line with the federal government’s sustainability and digital-first vision.
The partnership between Pakistan Railways and PITB is set to lay the groundwork for broader tech-enabled upgrades in the transportation sector, reflecting the government’s prioritization of innovation within public services. With a combination of international connectivity, investment potential, and digital progress, Pakistan Railways is preparing for a significant shift in how citizens experience rail travel.
