Pakistan Railways has officially launched its largest digitisation initiative, the Railway Advanced Infrastructure Network (RAIN) Project, marking a significant step toward modernising the national railway system. The Directorate of IT presented the roadmap for Phase I during a high-level meeting chaired by Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi, where officials confirmed that the project is progressing on schedule and remains on track for completion by June 2026. This initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and passenger services through comprehensive technological upgrades.
The RAIN Project Phase I centres on connectivity, real-time data, and infrastructure enhancement. One of its key features is the introduction of GPS tracking for all trains and locomotives, enabling precise monitoring of train locations and improving traffic management across the network. In parallel, Pakistan Railways is undertaking the fiberisation of 1,700 kilometres of the ML-1 railway line. This upgrade not only supports real-time data monitoring but also enables data-driven decision-making, laying the groundwork for more efficient railway operations. Passengers are expected to notice improvements at major stations, which will be upgraded into “safe and smart” hubs with high-speed internet connectivity, following the successful example of Rawalpindi station.
Financial self-reliance is a notable aspect of the RAIN Project, with Phase I fully funded through Pakistan Railways’ own revenue streams. Minister Abbasi highlighted the operational benefits, stressing that the initiative will reduce train delays and improve safety. The project also includes the establishment of new command and control centres at Lahore headquarters and divisional offices, designed to ensure rapid responses to emergencies and optimise train operations. Through these measures, the RAIN Project aims to create a more efficient, passenger-focused, and technologically advanced railway system, reflecting the organisation’s long-term strategy to modernise Pakistan’s transport infrastructure.
In related developments, Pakistan Railways’ oversight has seen leadership changes with the Senate Standing Committee on Railways electing a new chairman. Senator Shahadat Awan was unanimously confirmed at Parliament House, following a proposal by Senator Dost Ali Jeesar and seconding by Senator Ashraf Ali Jatoi. The appointment signals continued legislative support for ongoing railway reforms and digital initiatives, aligning with broader goals to strengthen institutional accountability and promote technology-driven improvements across the network.
By integrating GPS tracking, fibre-optic infrastructure, and smart station upgrades, Pakistan Railways is positioning itself as a more connected and data-driven organisation. The RAIN Project is expected to improve operational safety, reduce delays, and provide passengers with modern amenities while demonstrating the capacity of national institutions to implement large-scale technology transformations. Officials emphasise that combining infrastructure development with digital tools will play a central role in enhancing the reliability, responsiveness, and efficiency of the railway system in Pakistan.
