Pakistan has announced plans to invite Azerbaijan to participate in its upcoming auction for 600 MHz of radio spectrum, aimed at enhancing the country’s telecom infrastructure and connectivity. Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja stated that the auction is scheduled for the next quarter, bringing total available spectrum in Pakistan to over 900 MHz. She highlighted that these radio frequency resources are essential for mobile operators and telecom companies, as they enable improved network coverage and higher quality of service across the country. According to Khawaja, the auction is open to all participants, and the government sees significant potential for Azerbaijan’s telecom industry to engage, particularly given Pakistan’s rapidly growing population of 240 million and the corresponding increase in digital demand.
During her remarks, the minister emphasized Pakistan’s broader goals of enhancing undersea and international fiber connectivity to diversify routes both east and west. Khawaja explained that the collaboration with Azerbaijan aims to position Pakistan as a data transit hub, creating direct fiber-optic links that could connect the country through Central Asia to Azerbaijan. This approach, she noted, is aligned with reviving a modern digital Silk Road, facilitating faster data flows, better connectivity for regional trade, and opportunities for telecom operators to expand services. Access to submarine cables and additional infrastructure is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s position as a regional digital gateway while supporting international business and communication needs.
Shaza Fatima Khawaja also highlighted ongoing cooperation between Pakistan and Azerbaijan in multiple sectors beyond telecommunications. She noted that both countries are actively working to improve transport connectivity and bilateral trade, with direct flights already operating between Lahore, Islamabad, and Baku, while Karachi and other provincial capitals may soon be added. The minister underscored that the collaboration extends to sectors including mining and minerals, emphasizing the importance of investment, infrastructure development, and cultural ties to support deeper economic engagement. According to officials, these initiatives are intended to complement the technological collaboration while creating a framework for broader regional partnerships.
The spectrum auction and connectivity projects form part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to expand digital infrastructure and encourage international investment in technology and telecom sectors. By engaging Azerbaijan, the government seeks to foster cross-border cooperation that strengthens regional networks, promotes innovation, and supports a digitally connected economy. Khawaja indicated that Pakistan is actively exploring ways to make its digital and transport networks more efficient, while simultaneously providing opportunities for foreign participants to contribute to infrastructure development and service expansion. Through these measures, Pakistan aims to facilitate sustainable growth in the telecom sector and support the country’s strategic objective of becoming a regional hub for digital trade and connectivity.
