Pakistan’s mobile phone imports skyrocketed in the first eleven months of fiscal year 2023-24 (FY24), according to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The country imported Rs. 458.472 billion worth of mobile phones, a staggering 277.37% increase compared to the same period last year. This translates to a dollar figure of $1.621 billion, reflecting a 213.97% year-on-year growth.
Despite the overall growth, May 2024 saw a slight dip in imports compared to April. The country imported $158.842 million worth of phones in May, a 1.58% decrease from the previous month. However, this figure still represents a massive 267.68% increase year-on-year compared to May 2023.
The surge in mobile phone imports is mirrored in the broader telecommunication sector. Overall telecom imports reached $2.047 billion during July-May 2023-24, reflecting a 138.04% growth compared to the same period last fiscal year. May 2024 also saw a 163.19% year-on-year increase in overall telecom imports compared to May 2023.
