Pakistan Launches Open Data Portal for Public Access and Policy Innovation

Open Data Pakistan, the country’s new national open data portal, is now live. Developed with a commitment to international standards and modeled after well-known global platforms such as data.gov, this initiative marks a significant step in promoting data accessibility and transparency across Pakistan. Designed as a publicly funded effort, the platform is now available to researchers, journalists, policymakers, students, and the general public.

The platform introduces a modular and transparent infrastructure that adheres to internationally recognized open data protocols. Users can access and explore a wide variety of searchable, reusable datasets, enabling both standard data browsing and more advanced functionalities such as visualizations and custom downloads, depending on the formatting of the data. The goal is to simplify access to critical information that can inform academic research, support policy development, and encourage civic engagement.

Built for interoperability, the portal is capable of integrating with other open data platforms globally. This design feature allows cross-sector collaboration, facilitates comparative studies, and strengthens the data ecosystem across institutions and geographies. Whether users are seeking socio-economic indicators, environmental statistics, or development metrics, Open Data Pakistan offers a centralized hub that enhances how data is shared and consumed.

This effort is the result of extensive collaboration among academic and governmental institutions. The Computer Science and Economics teams at LUMS, with special acknowledgment to Dr. Naveed Arshad, played a key role in shaping the platform’s technical foundation. Strong support was also provided by the National Center in Big Data and Cloud Computing (NCBC), which contributed technical capabilities and expertise essential to the development process. The Planning Commission has been a critical partner since the inception of the project, ensuring alignment with national policy objectives and providing ongoing institutional backing.

By enabling access to structured, high-quality data, the platform aims to empower evidence-based policymaking, foster innovation in the public and private sectors, and ensure greater public accountability. The availability of datasets through a user-friendly interface supports diverse use cases—from academic research and journalistic analysis to application development and civic technology initiatives.

The launch of Open Data Pakistan reflects a growing momentum within the country to digitize governance and create an infrastructure that values transparency and informed decision-making. The portal can be accessed online at https://opendata.com.pk, and stakeholders are encouraged to explore its offerings and contribute to its evolution.

This initiative demonstrates how strategic use of technology, cross-sector collaboration, and public funding can deliver impactful digital tools that benefit society at large. Through initiatives like this, Pakistan continues to expand its digital governance capabilities and deepen its commitment to data accessibility.
