Pakistan has introduced a digital platform, the Maktab system, designed to maintain comprehensive records of students across public universities, Federal Education Minister Wajiha Qamar announced on Monday. The platform, developed under the Higher Education Commission framework, aims to streamline academic tracking from enrolment to degree issuance while enhancing transparency and efficiency in higher education. Initially, 25 public universities will be covered, with plans to expand the system nationwide to include all public universities.
The Maktab system will allow authorities, students, and parents to monitor academic progress through a single portal, ensuring that enrolment, grades, transcripts, and degrees are securely and efficiently recorded. Artificial intelligence will be integrated to manage data, maintain system security, and optimize administrative workflows. Minister Qamar emphasized that this initiative strengthens accountability, facilitates digital tender scrutiny, and reduces manual inefficiencies, providing a more reliable framework for academic operations.
Students and parents will benefit from the system’s digital complaint registration feature, accessible through e-katcheries and online portals. This functionality is expected to improve oversight, reduce delays in grievance handling, and ensure responsive service delivery within universities. The first phase of Maktab focuses on BS program admissions, impacting approximately 4,000 students, with plans to extend its coverage to additional programs and degree levels over time. By consolidating student records in a single digital environment, the system aims to modernize administrative practices and enhance the overall quality of higher education in Pakistan.
Complementing Maktab, the Inter Board Coordination Commission has launched a 24-hour online system for equivalence and verification of international board registrations. This initiative simplifies processes for students seeking academic recognition abroad, aligning with broader efforts to modernize Pakistan’s education ecosystem. Minister Qamar highlighted that these reforms reflect a commitment to improving educational quality, adopting digital solutions, and strengthening Pakistan’s position in the global academic landscape. The Maktab system represents a strategic step in leveraging technology to create a more efficient, transparent, and accountable higher education environment while providing students with accessible and secure academic services.
