Pakistan has initiated discussions with NASA and leading aerospace companies in the United States to strengthen cooperation in space science, research, education, and technology as part of its long term strategy to expand the country’s space programme and scientific capabilities. Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Prof. Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary held a series of meetings during visits to NASA Space Center Houston and the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, where he shared Pakistan’s vision of becoming a knowledge driven economy supported by scientific research, technological advancement, and a highly skilled workforce. The engagements focused on identifying opportunities for collaboration that can contribute to the country’s long term space and technology objectives.
A key topic during the discussions was the proposed establishment of a Space Learning Centre and Museum in Narowal. According to the government, the planned facility aims to inspire students by providing interactive learning experiences related to astronomy, space exploration, and scientific discovery. The centre will feature exhibits covering the solar system, galaxies, black holes, the Big Bang, and the history of human space missions, creating an educational environment that encourages interest in science and technology. Officials stated that representatives from NASA and participating United States aerospace companies expressed interest in supporting the proposed project while also exploring wider institutional cooperation with Pakistan’s developing space sector. The discussions reflected a shared interest in promoting scientific education and expanding collaboration through knowledge exchange and technical partnerships.
During the meetings, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal reiterated Pakistan’s long term objective of achieving a lunar mission by 2035 and establishing a Pakistani presence on the Moon by 2047. He emphasized that achieving these goals would require sustained international cooperation in scientific research, technical training, mission planning, institutional capacity building, and technology transfer. The minister also highlighted Pakistan’s growing pool of engineers, scientists, and information technology professionals, inviting American organizations to collaborate on joint research initiatives, advanced engineering projects, software development, and technology innovation. In addition, he presented Pakistan’s expanding higher education network, specialized academic programmes in space sciences, and the National Centre for Satellite Technology and Geographic Information Systems as important platforms for collaborative research, talent development, and scientific advancement.
The discussions also covered broader opportunities for Pakistan and the United States to strengthen cooperation in education, healthcare, climate resilience, innovation, and space exploration. Prof. Ahsan Iqbal described scientific collaboration as an important tool for addressing shared global challenges while supporting sustainable technological development. Referring to climate change, he noted that Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to its impacts despite contributing only a small share of global greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in developing technology driven solutions. According to officials, these engagements are part of the government’s wider efforts to build stronger international technology partnerships, promote scientific excellence, expand research collaboration, and equip Pakistani youth with the knowledge and skills needed for future industries while advancing the country’s long term space programme.
