Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has provided extensive IT training to over 600,000 individuals across the country during the fiscal year 2024–2025. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to promote the IT sector and enhance technology-related exports, which have become core priorities for Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s administration.

According to a detailed briefing provided to the Prime Minister, out of the 600,000 individuals trained, approximately 49,800 received specialized, high-end training. This specialized training is focused on preparing individuals for advanced roles in both national and international IT job markets. The training programs cover a wide range of crucial IT skills, from software development to data analytics and cybersecurity, ensuring that trainees are equipped with the knowledge required to thrive in the global digital economy.

During the briefing, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed the government’s commitment to bolstering the country’s tech sector by making IT education a compulsory subject in schools. He directed that a strategy be immediately formulated to introduce IT education from grade six onward. The aim is to foster a generation of young individuals who are not only familiar with but also proficient in technology, ensuring that they are ready to contribute to Pakistan’s growing digital economy.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of uniformity in IT education across the country. He urged provincial governments to collaborate and develop a standardized IT curriculum, ensuring that students in schools, colleges, and universities receive equal access to quality IT education. This initiative is expected to bridge the regional gaps in education quality, providing all students, regardless of their location, with the same opportunities to learn and develop their skills.

In line with the government’s vision of promoting IT education across all regions, the Prime Minister instructed that special efforts be made to launch IT training programs in underdeveloped areas, including Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Balochistan. These regions, which traditionally face challenges in accessing quality education, will benefit from the targeted deployment of training programs aimed at empowering individuals with the skills required for both local and international job markets.

The meeting also reviewed the ongoing School Broadband Connectivity Project, which aims to enhance internet access in schools across Islamabad. This initiative is expected to improve digital infrastructure, enabling schools to offer better access to online educational resources and IT training programs. The government’s investment in upgrading internet connectivity in schools aligns with its broader strategy to create a more tech-savvy population and ensure that students in both urban and rural areas are not left behind in the digital age.

The briefing also highlighted the significant collaboration between the government and Huawei, which is helping to establish Skills Vocational Training Centers at several key institutions. These include the International Islamic University Islamabad, the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), and COMSATS University Lahore Campus. Huawei has been instrumental in providing specialized training programs in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, big data, and cybersecurity. These programs are now part of the curriculum at leading institutions like the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute, UET Taxila, and Mehran University Jamshoro, ensuring that students are well-equipped to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving IT job market.

The partnership between the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training and Huawei is also set to benefit a large number of students. The initiative will provide training to 146,367 students and upgrade 1,300 laboratories, further enhancing the educational infrastructure in Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The goal is to ensure that students in these regions have access to world-class training facilities and are well-prepared to enter the workforce with the necessary skills and expertise.

Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima, who attended the meeting, underscored the importance of these initiatives in transforming Pakistan’s IT education system. She emphasized that the government’s efforts to expand IT education, particularly in underserved areas, would play a crucial role in empowering youth and contributing to the country’s economic growth.

Huawei CEO Ethan Sun, who also participated in the meeting, expressed his company’s continued commitment to supporting Pakistan’s IT education sector. He noted that Huawei’s collaboration with the government was a strategic step toward building a skilled workforce capable of driving technological innovation and growth.

The comprehensive IT training initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication are expected to have a far-reaching impact on Pakistan’s future. By equipping a large number of individuals with the technical skills necessary for today’s digital economy, the government is laying the foundation for a more tech-driven and innovation-led future. With a focus on high-end training, infrastructure improvements, and strategic collaborations, the country is poised to strengthen its position in the global IT sector while providing its citizens with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
